Figuring it Out

In the past few weeks Kyle has decided on random occasions he does not want to sit in his chair to eat. This can occur at breakfast, lunch or dinner. He will straighten himself out, scream and cry to make it difficult for us to put him in his chair. So we let him scream on the floor next to us while we have a nice, not so peaceful meal. He is usually trying to climb in my lab and screaming "ma ma" over and over. But I stay strong and don't pick him up at the table while I am eating. (when all I want to do is pick him up and make him feel better, but I don't). Sometimes we will ask him if he wants to get in his chair and eat. His response to this, pause from screaming, look at you and very clearly says "NO!" and then continues to scream.
So this morning he was doing it again starting at 7:15. Brian and I sat and ate our breakfast to the sounds of a 20 month old screaming. When we were finished he still did not want to get in his chair so we started coloring and when I had my back turned for one second he grabbed his peanut butter toast. He is sneaky!
Several times we would ask him do you want to get in your chair he would go to his chair shake his head yes and we would put him in his chair only for him to scream and throw a fit. After a few attempts I asked him if he wanted me to lower his chair so he could climb in himself, he said "yes." I lowered his chair. He climbed in and even handed me the buckle to strap him in! Since he was so low from the table I told him he needed to use his tray, to this he told me a very firm "NO!" So I pushed him up to the table and he ate with his head level with the table and his food almost above his head. BUT he was eating in his chair and not screaming. It only took 1 hour to figure out what he wanted...
To do it all by himself!!!

Are you sure he isn't 2 or 3? That sounds like an independent 2 or 3 year old!
